KJM3410 – Analytical Chemistry. Element determination I.

Course content

The course deals with instrumental methods for determination of the chemical elements and statistics for analytical chemistry. The methods included are molecular absorption spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectrometry (flame, graphite furnace, hydride generation), atomic emission spectrometry (flame, inductively coupled plasma, arc, spark), mass spectrometry (inductively coupled plasma, spark source, glow discharge), ion chromatography, automated analysis (flow injection) and sample decomposition methods (dry ashing, microwave decomposition). The statistical methods included are significance tests, control diagrams and calibration (regression, correlation, limits of detection).

Learning outcome

The student should learn the chemical and physical principles and applications of the selected instrumental methods of analysis, and should be able to use the statistical methods for the evaluation of quantitative measurements. The student should develop practical skills in sample preparation and be able to carry out quantitative determination of chemical elements by the methods taught in the laboratory course.

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)
  • Chemistry (1+2)
  • Biology (1+2)
  • Information technology (1+2)
  • Geosciences (1+2)
  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

KJM2400 – Analytical Chemistry I or similar course.

Recommended previous knowledge

KJM1100 – General chemistry (continued), KJM1110 – Organic chemistry I (continued), KJM1120 – Inorganic Chemistry (continued) and KJM1130 – Physical Chemistry I - Thermodynamics and Kinetics, or similar courses.

Teaching

The course includes 20 hours of lectures, 6 hours of exercises and a mandatory laboratory course which consists of 4 exercises (60 laboratory hours). The laboratory course has to be approved before the student can take part in the final examination.

The first laboratory lesson is mandatory. If you are unable to join the first mandatory laboratory lessons, you have to inform the Expedition Office in advance (phone 22 85 54 46 e-mail ekspedisjonen@kjemi.uio.no). If you fail to register in either of these ways, you will loose your access to the examination for the semester.

Examination

Written (4 hours) or oral examination. Letter grades A-F.

Information about examination rules.

Examination support material

Students can bring a book in statistics.

Language of examination

You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.

Other

The teaching will be cancelled if less than 3 students are signed for the course by the closing date for course registration in January.

A laboratory course is valid for 4 semesters after it was taken.
