Course content
It is our goal that students and employees have a safe working environment, and to ensure that all teaching and research takes place within safe conditions. This course provides basic information on the concept of HSE, relevant laws and regulations and the expectations of the University of Oslo concerning Health, Safety and Environment. In addition, the course provides a theoretical and practical training in First Aid and Fire Safety.
Learning outcome
After completing the course you should have the following knowledge:
- What HSE is and what goals the university has for HSE.
- How the University of Oslo wants to ensure safety objectives and the requirements of HSE objectives set for you as a student.
- What kind of support that is available, if you as a student should meet safety challenges in your learning environment.
- Basic First Aid.
- What to do to prevent fires and what to do if a fire occurs.
Admission
MNHMS0015 is compulsory for:
New students at all Bachelors programs at the Faculty of Mathematisc and Natural Science
New students at the 5-year Master's programs:
New students at the following Masters programs:
- Biology (Master's two years)
- Farmasi (2. avdeling)
- Physics (Master's two years)
- Geosciences (Master's two years)
- Chemistry (Master's two years)
- Materials Science and Nanotechnology (Master's two years)
- Molecular Biosciences (Master's two years)
Other students taking one or more courses that have MNHMS0015 as a mandatory prerequisites.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.
Overlapping courses
HMS0501 – Safety and Physical Environment and HMS0502 – Positive Learning Environment overlap with the lecture HMS system at UiO. HMS0507 – Fire Safety overlaps with the group lesson in fire safety.
Teaching
Teaching includes one 45 minutes lecture common for all participants (HSE system at UiO) and 2 group lessons, each of 3 hours (first aid and fire safety) at the beginning of each semester. Participation in all parts of the course is required to pass the course.

The course uses Fronter.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
To pass the MNHMS0015 you must have approved participation in all parts of the teaching. You are responsible for ensuring that your attendance is registered at lectures and group lessons.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
Other
It is compulsory education and is made ??attendance record. Illness or other valid reason of absence must be documented by a medical certificate or other equivalent documentation. Medical certificates can be delivered to MN-studieinfo during opening hours or sent to the office by post. Remember to state which course and for which date the medical certificate applies to.
All students who have been away for the entire course or parts of the course must take the equivalent course or parts of course the next time it is offered (at the beginning of the following semester).
Students who have not passed MNHMS0015 - Introduction to Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) will not get their degree approved, if the course is compulsory in the program requirements, or if it is formal prerequisite knowledge for any of the courses in the degree.
