Syllabus/achievement requirements

This course does not have a syllabus in the usual sense. Much of the literature you will use, you will have to find yourself. There will be a library course to teach you how to search the mathematical literature for relevant information.

In the beginning of the course you will be given a small assignment aiming at practicing finding and communicating mathematical knowledge. For the main assignment you will first be presented a number of topics by potential advisors. You will then choose a topic and an advisor, and work on it for the rest of the semester.

One of the main goals is to teach you to present mathematics, orally and in writing. To present mathematics in writing you need to master mathematical text editing. All assignments are to be typed in a variant of Tex. If you do not already know how to use Tex, we recommend that you learn the variant called LaTex. In that case you should acquire for instance Leslie Lamport: LaTex: a Document Preparation System, 2nd Edition, Addison-Wesley, 1994.
