Welcome to MAT4305 / MAT9305!
Welcome to the course MAT4305 – Partial Differential Equations and Sobolev Spaces.
We will mainly be using the book L. C. Evans – Partial Differential Equations (can be bought in Akademika). We will also go through a bit of distribution theory, which I will take from the book S Kesavan – Functional Analysis and Applications (send me an e-mail if you need access to it); alternatively, you can read Chapter 5 of W. Cheney – Analysis for Applied Mathematics (available for download on Springerlink).
Tentatively, the syllabus will be Chapter 5, 6 and 7.1 in Evans.
We will use a lot of measure theory and integration in Euclidean space, and some functional analysis. It's a good idea to have taken at least one course in PDEs (MAT3360 or MAT4301), and courses in measure theory and functional analysis (e.g. MAT3400). If you don't have this background then you should check out and read up on the syllabus in MAT4301 and MAT3400.
There will be lectures twice a week. In addition I will give office hours once a week, where you can come by and ask questions. I will try to post exercises on a weekly basis.
Let me know if you have any questions!
Best regards,
Ulrik
