Schedule, syllabus and examination date

Course content

The topics covered in the course are deformations, strains and stresses in solid (elastic) materials; constitutive equations (linear and nonlinear models, isotropic and anisotropic); elastic energy and work; balance equations (static and dynamic); solving elastic initial and boundary value problems numerically; the finite element method.

Learning outcome

After completing this course you will:

  • have knowledge about how a solid (materials, structures) behaves when it is exposed to forces and deformations;
  • have knowledge about numerical solution of solid mechanics problems using finite elements;
  • have a basis for further studies in solid mechanics and other subjects where knowledge of solid mechanics is important (e.g. materials science, geology, biology).

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.

Overlapping courses

*The information about overlaps for discontinued courses may not be complete. If you have questions, please contact the Department.

Teaching

4 hours of lectures, 2 hours exercises per week. The exercises are mainly based on independent work from the students.

Examination

mandatory assignments. Students are required to write the mandatory exercises in LaTeX and do a 15 minutes oral presentation towards related to the mandatory exercise.

Final written examination.

Language of examination

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals
