MAT1000 – Mathematics for applications I
Course description

Course content
Real numbers and quantities, functions in one variable, periodic phenomena, continuity and limits, exponential, logarithmic and potential functions, derivation, integration, elementary linear algebra, some calculus of two variables, including partial derivation.
Learning outcome
Achieve knowledge and skills in calculus. Be able to apply the theory on certain problems in natural science.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2
And in addition one of these:
- Physics (1+2)
- Chemistry (1+2)
- Biology (1+2)
- Information technology (1+2)
- Geosciences (1+2)
- Technology and theories of research (1+2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

- 8 credits overlap with ECON2200 – Matematikk 1/Mikro 1 (MM1) (discontinued)
- 8 credits overlap with ECON1120
- 10 credits overlap with MAT1001 – Mathematics 1 (discontinued)
- 3 credits overlap with MAT1012 – Mathematics 2 (discontinued)
10 credits with MAT1100 – Calculus, MA001 and MAT100.

Teaching
Spring: 4 hours of lectures and 2 hours of problem sessions in plenum per week. Exercises in groups with guidance.
Autumn: 4 hours of lectures, 2 hours of problem sessions in plenum, and 2 hours of exercises per week.
Examination
Two compulsory assignments have to be handed in and approved. Midterm exam and written examination at the end of the semester adds up to final grade. Letter grading (A-F).
Midterm exam counts for 1/3 and the written examination at the end of the semester counts for 2/3. The final grade is based on the total score and a general impression after the final examination.

Permitted aids at the exam: All written aids and approved calculator.
Language of examination
Subjects taught in English will only offer the exam paper in English.
You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
This subject offers new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination. Deferred examinations for students who due to illness or other valid reason of absence were unable to sit for their final exams will be arranged at the same time. (These valid reasons has to be documented within given deadlines.)
