ENT4050 – Foundations of Teamwork and Leadership

Course content
This course gives a general introduction to teams and teamwork as experienced in an entrepreneurial context. The course is broadly scoped and includes topics such as team design, team management, problem solving, decision-making and conflicts in teams. The purpose of the course is to build your knowledge base and proficiency in effectively working in and leading entrepreneurial teams. Your ongoing teamwork in parallel courses serves as an active learning arena where you can apply your learning about teamwork and team leadership in a real setting.
Learning outcome
After taking this course, you will:
- Have detailed knowledge about frameworks and concepts for understanding teams, how they develop, functions and the dynamics of teams
- Have a solid understanding of critical team processes including communication, problem solving, decision-making, handling conflicts and methods to leverage teams most efficiently,
- Be able to analyze team processes and critical team events with respect to relevant theory.
- Have advanced knowledge of special issues and dilemmas facing entrepreneurial teams and founders
- Have knowledge about the structure of an organization, including boards, role of boards and top management teams
- Have developed your proficiency to effectively work in and lead professional teams in both a corporate setting and in a start-up company
- Have developed your proficiency in managing and motivate team members and productively deal with conflicts and creativity
- Understand your own strengths and development needs in working in professional teams
Admission to the course
The course is available only for students admitted to the study programme Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management (master).
Recommended previous knowledge
The course is designed to be taken in parallel with ENT4000 – Business Creation, ENT4070 – Entrepreneurial Opportunity Evaluation and ENT4330 – Entrepreneurial Finance.
Teaching
Weekly classes throughout the semester that include lectures, in-class activities and group exercises. In addition, readings and group/individual assignments between classes.
Due to the significant amount of group exercises and in-class activities in this course, 80% attendance of the lectures is mandatory. Completion of mandatory attendance is required in order to pass the course.
Examination
The course grade is calculated based on the following components:
- A final group assignment including an oral group presentation accounting for in total 50% of the score. Students in each group are given the same score. Group members who do not fulfill their obligations can be scored individually from the group.
- Individual assignments/quizzes given during the semester accounting for in total 50% of the overall score.
Failing a graded assignment does still allow participation in the remaining exams. All exams and assignments must be taken during the same semester.
Completion of mandatory attendance is required in order to pass the course.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester. Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
