HELSEF4407 – Health Literacy
Course content
What is health literacy? How has it evolved and how do we understand the concept today? What are the concept's scientific, theoretical and ideological underpinnings? What is the relevance of health literacy (micro-macro levels)? How can health literacy be researched? How can health literacy be supported through interventions? How does health literacy connect to knowledge translation? What is the role and potential significance of health literacy in global health policy and in promoting health equity? The course will focus on these questions based on current research and theory in the field.

- understand and critically reflect on health literacy as a concept and its relevance for health services in a broad perspective and in different contexts
- understand and critically reflect on how health literacy can be researched and practised in a health services perspective

- critically analyze and discuss the concept of health literacy and its relevance
- describe and discuss how health literacy can be researched
- give examples and discuss possible interventions to promote and support health literacy in different contexts and on different health services levels

- integrate and evaluate health literacy in research, and communicate and discuss academic issues related to health literacy in practice and research
Admission

The course is available for students at the following master programmes:
Teaching
Teaching 5-6 days over 2 weeks with an oral presentation (exam) at the last day of the course.
The lectures will alternate between oral and written presentations, substituted with different discussion forms and student active teaching methods
Examination
Oral presentation (students can choose whether they want to present individually or in a group)
A lecture (maximum 15 minutes, time will depend on the number of students) on a topic related to the subject content where you will be trained in oral dissemination of research.
The course is passed when the lecturer has approved the lecture.
The examination will take place on the last day of teaching.
Grading
The Board at the University of Oslo has decided to introduce detailed guidelines for all examinations, which take place at the University. The description of the grading should be clear and transparent. This is done to ensure alignment between learning outcomes, assignments, and grading. The Faculty of Medicine has developed a web page with information regarding exams and the grading procedures (norwegian version).
Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
