MF9360 – Basic Research Methods in Addiction Medicine

Course content

This course offers basic knowledge in research methodology in the field of clinical addiction research and is relevant for researchers who are either early in their career as a PhD student or clinicians. However, the knowledge imparted in this course is also relevant for researchers who are further in their careers. The course started as a crash course for those waiting to attend the larger PhD courses and aims at covering the first basic skills necessary in all research. It is thus nor essential to be in clinical addiction research

Learning outcome

You are taught basic knowledge on how to read and write a scientific paper, statistics, how to search for literature, how to present research, relevant psychometric instruments for the addiction field (AUDIT, DUDIT, PRISM and EuropASI), as well as ethical challenges when doing research on the addiction field. Some of the psychometric instruments will require certification. That kind of certification is not provided in this course.

Admission

Ph.D. candidates and students at the Medical Student Research Programme (MSR) will get first priority to the course. Maximum number of particpants is 30.

Teaching

Note! You have to participate in at least 80 % of the teaching to be allowed to take the exam. Attendance at lectures will be registered.

A take-home exam will be given at the end of the course with a three week deadline. Grading: pass/fail

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
