OD4200 – Dentistry, 8. semester
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
Theory and clinical practice is continued from the 7th semester. The practical competence is given high priority. At the same time the cause of diseases is highlighted. It is expected that students continue working on the master’s thesis during this semester which is to be submitted in the 10th semester.
Learning outcome
The emphasis is on oral rehabilitation within the following areas:
- Toothloss/edentulous
- Cariology
- Loss of supporting structures
- Malocclusion
- Gerodontology?
- Oral tumours
The following subjects are included: behavioural science and communication, cariology, gerodontology, dental ethics, endodontology, prosthetic dentistry and oral function, pedodontics and behavioural sciences, periodontology, oral surgery and oral medicine, orthodontics, maxillofacial radiology, oral pathology, microbiology and infection control, biomaterial science, and pharmacology and pharmacotherapy.
Admission to the course
Closed professional degree course.
Formal prerequisite knowledge
OD4100 – Odontologistudiet, 7. semester
A student who fails an examination normally cannot progress in the programme until the examination has been passed. Students who take a re-sit examination/postponed test, can continue to attend their courses until the examination results are announced, and if applicable until the result of the appeal has been announced. The student must stop attending courses and will be transferred to the following class if he/she does not appeal the examination result, or if the result of the appealed examination grade is that the student fails the examination.
Recommended previous knowledge
Before this semester begins it is expected that the students know how to examine the oral cavity and can recognize diseases in the teeth and their supporting tissues and of the oral mucosa (relative to healthy tissue). It is not expected that diagnoses can be made for all conditions, but it is expected that the students have advanced knowledge of extended prophylaxis, what precautions must be taken to prevent diseases in teeth and supporting tissues and which hygiene measurements must be applied to prevent spread of infections in the clinical environment by means of sterilization autoclaving and hygiene regimes. In addition, it is expected that the students know the different treatment modalities and under supervision get training to perform these.
Teaching
Teaching in small groups, seminars, courses, lectures, clinical courses and demonstrations, individual work and guidance in patient treatment.
- Mandatory activities: Absence may not exceed 15% within each subject area. All courses and seminars are mandatory. Tests and written assignments given throughout the semester must be approved to qualify for examination at the end of the semester.
- Completion of mandatory activities qualifies for one examination attempt. If the examination is failed, all mandatory activities must be repeated, unless otherwise arranged by the leader of the semester committee.
- Clinic: The clinical service is compulsory and must be approved in order to be approved for the semester.
- SamPraks: Toghether in clinical practice,?SamPraks, is and interdisciplinary practice offered to students in 8.-10.semester and is compulsory.
Examination
All mandatory activities in the 8th semester must be completed to qualify for examination at the end of the semester.
Approved clinical practice is a prerequisite for an approved semester.
The form of assessment in the 8th semester is five subject-specific written exams, to be held on five days at the end of the semester. These exams will be in the form of 4-hour exams, in cariology, endodontology, periodontology, pharmacology and gerodontology.

No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
If you want to improve your grade in this topic, you have to send an application to the Section for Studies. If a postponed or re-sit exam is being arranged, the application deadline is one week prior to the exam. If you want to retake the exam at the next ordinary sitting of the examination, the application deadline is 1st? February.
