SOS4903 – Family structure and social change

Course content

This course deals with structural and cultural changes concerning families and childhood in Norway in the period following World War II. Attention will be given to the diversification of parenting and partnering in Europe such as the dual provider family, single parenthood, cohabitation etc. Recent fertility trends will be considered in relation to gender and to the work-family balance.

Learning outcome

Students are expected to gain a theoretically informed knowledge of recent changes related to childhood and family structure in Norway. Students are invited to contribute with oral or written presentations.

Admission

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

Admission to the master program or 2-3 years of completed studies in the social sciences.

Teaching

Seminars where lectures and student activity are combined. The course is designed for both Norwegian students and students on exchange programmes or bilateral agreements. All teaching will be given in English.

Examination

A 4-hour written examination and an essay on the topic of the course. The written examination and the essay will each constitute 50% of the final grade. The ECTS grading scale (A-F) will be used.

Other

This course have been arranged for exchange students, and will be given only if there are exchange students who wish to take them. If the courses are given as planned, they will also be open to MA students in sociology as theory specialization courses.
