In addition to Chapter 4 in Romer's book the articles by Kydland and Prescott, Cole and Ohanian, Cooley, Li and Harltley et al will be relevant for the lecture on Friday. A good place to start may be the article by Cole and Ohanian, perhaps followed by Li (don't get stuck in technicalities in the last part). (The lecture should be possible to follow even if you havn't read any of these articles yet). The lecture on Monday will draw on the same material and on a basic knowledge of standard keynesian models, either from undergraduate macro or from ch. 5 in Romer.

In the chapters from Krueger: "Dynamic Fiscal Policy" that are on the reading list, the main emphasis should be on sections 4.1, 4.2 and 5.4. The material on the specifics of American social security arrangements can be skipped.

The lecure on Monday October 12 will correspond to lecture 7 in the original lecture plan. The intention is to follow the original lecture plan from now on. To facilitate that there will be an extra lecture on Tuesday October 20 16.15 -18. So far the lectures have covered the topics intended for lectures 1 - 6 in the original lecture plan with the exception of pensions (social security). Pensions will instead be discussed together with savings later in the semester.

Expected preparations for the first Matlab crash-course session (Wed Aug 19):

  • Read notes1.pdf and answer questions 1, 2 and 3 on pp. 7-10.

  • We have compiled a short list of useful Matlab references: matlab_links.pdf. For students with none or limited previous experience with computers, we recommend 'En kort innf?ring i Matlab' for Norwegian-speaking students and the 'Introduction to Matlab' by Monique Ebell for non-Norwegian-speaking students.
