Course content

The course focuses on individual and community health and health disparities within a multicultural, global context. We examine different understandings of health, well-being and illness, how people cope and live with disease, and how health and illness is shaped by contextual factors. Migration and health will be an important focus.

Learning outcome

The aim of this course is to provide students with knowledge and skills based on theory and research so that they are able to observe, understand, and eventually act upon, major factors detrimental to health and well-being in the contemporary society.

Students learn to engage in critical reflection and to take the multicultural perspective into account when planning, implementing and evaluating health initiatives with diverse populations.

Admission

The course is offered to students, who have been accepted into the Master’s Degree Programme in Psychology – specialization Health-and social psychology (HESOPS).

Students from other master’s programmes at the University of Oslo/ERASMUS may be admitted into this course by individual application to the department. The application has to include a confirmation from your department that the course can be a part of your degree. For international students: If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures for international applicants. You also need to attach a copy of your BA degree.

Only students admitted to the course may take part in instruction and tuition and sit for the examination.

Students who are admitted to study programmes or individual courses at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in StudentWeb.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

No prerequisites. A basic knowledge of health psychology is however recommended. Students might want to familiarize themselves with the basic topics through any introductory book in health psychology.

Teaching

The teaching will be given through seminars and lectures in the autum semester. There will be 10 hours of lectures, and 6 hours of seminars. Attendance is compulsory in the field work assignments and at the group presentations.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

Compulsory activities will consist of:

  • Fieldwork assignment with reflection notes
  • Group presentation of an applied topic relevant for theme of the course
    The course will be marked pass/fail.

ePhorus is a text recognition program that may be used on texts turned in as home exams at the Institute of Psychology.

Examination support material

No examination support material is allowed.

Language of examination

English. Students are allowed to submit reflections notes in Norwegian, but the topic will be given in English only. The group presentation may be in English or Norwegian.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Justification of examination results and appeals

Students can request an explanation of their grades, and can also appeal against their grades or make a complaint about formal examination errors.

Resit an examination

There is no make up exam for this course. Students who have been sick on the exam must register for the exam next time the course is scheduled.

If one doesn`t sit for the exam one must submit proof of legitimate absence (illness, etc.), see § 5.5 in Regulations for studies and examinations at the University.

Students who have special conditions - for example, that one is chronically ill, prevented from further progression or lose the right to study at the university, may apply to have a postponed exam the same term. It is not automatically granted.

Withdrawal from an examination

A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.

Evaluation

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
