PSY9050 – Mid-term evaluation

Course content

The mid-term evaluation contributes to good progress in the Ph.d. study through a thorough review of, and feedback on, the dissertation work at a time when a significant part of the work has been completed, but where there is still room to incorporate comments and criticism from academic peers.

Learning outcome

The mid-term evaluation should contribute to:

? stimulating candidates to make good progress in their writing by establishing an additional milestone, thereby strengthening the flow;

? providing candidates with closer follow-up along the way, through comprehensive and systematic feedback on their dissertation work at a time when important choices have been made, but when there is still reasonable time to incorporate comments and criticism before final submission;

? helping candidates to gain training in presenting the material to a wider audience;

? helping questions of quality and progress become a collective responsibility anchored in the unit's current research environment.

Candidates submit a status report for the Ph.d. thesis as well as a draft article/chapter. An appointed opponent, fellow candidates, seminar leaders and supervisors act as commentators.

Admission to the course

Candidates register for the mid-term evaluation approximately halfway through the admission period and at the end of their research seminar (see the educational plan in Studentweb). Registration is done in Studentweb.

The mid-term evaluation is reserved for students in the Ph.d. program at the Department of Psychology.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Participants must be admitted to the Ph.d. program in Psychology and must be enrolled in the Ph.d. seminar for their specialization.

Teaching

The mid-term evaluation at the Department of Psychology can be carried out as part of the candidate's participation in a research seminar, or in another suitable academic environment. If the evaluation is arranged in an external environment, the research leader or another employee at PSI designated by the research manager must be present at the external academic environment.

Examination

At least 1 week before the evaluation, the candidate distributes written material to everyone who will be present. The material should form the basis for an oral presentation (approx. 30 min) in which the candidate summarizes the work and status of the thesis. The presentation should give the opponent the opportunity to form an overall impression of progression and identify any challenges. The presentation should include a discussion of relevant research ethics issues, practical and methodological milestones (e.g. necessary approvals, data collection, statistical analyses), and planned and completed articles.

Approval means that the evaluation and plans for further work have been submitted.?

Approved mid-term evaluation requires that the candidate has documented that necessary approvals (e.g. REK, privacy, etc.) have been obtained and that the project is registered in ForskPro. If measures are proposed, the candidate and supervisor must send a list of proposed measures to the research leader at the Department of Psychology. If the opponent believes that the thesis, even with planned measures, will not be able to be submitted within a reasonable timeframe, the research leader must be notified. This will end the mid-term evaluation, which is thus approved as a mandatory activity.
