Course description
Course content
The course aims at developing better understanding of how you can write scientific texts and formulate a convincing argument. In order to acquire these skills, it is helpful to read texts written by other scholars in your field. Analysing and discussing the structure and content of an article has proven extremely helpful in order to become a good scholar and write a clear and accessible doctoral thesis. During the monthly analytical and writing skills seminar, we discuss various articles relevant to the fields of all the participants at the PhD program.
Learning outcome
The candidates will
- learn to analyse and critically discuss form, structure and content of scholarly articles.
- develop skills in identifying good arguments and formulating such arguments in their own research
- improve their own writing skills
- obtain competency to assess and address theory and methodology relevant to their own research project and dissertation
Teaching
The course is offered as a monthly seminar of approximately three hours.
Each PhD candidate will at least once be responsible for selecting an article and presenting it to all the others.
All participants are expected to submit a summary of the article w/two critical questions for the discussion no later than one day prior to the seminar.
The course presupposes that candidates have read the article carefully, have taken notes and participate actively in analysing, criticising and discussing form, content, structure and plausibility of the article.
Attendance
The course requires attendance at 8 seminars, minimum once selecting article and presenting it. Written summary (min 1 page) ought to be submitted no later than 24 hrs before each seminar. Active participation.
