TFF4102 – Research design and methodology

Course content

This course is a mandatory course (10 ects) in research design and methodology for students who are to begin their master thesis in the master?s degree programme in intercontextual theology, Profesjonsetikk og diakoni and Religion og samfunn. The aim of the course is to explore the ways in which studies are defined, how to formulate particular research problems, and what kinds of research tools and methods are applicable. The course surveys such diverse methodological fields as theology, hermeneutics, history, sociology, geography and anthropology in order to present the palette of tools available to the students. It shows students how to assess the contexts within which different methods may be used and how they can be implemented.

  • To guide students in the process of developing their own master research

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Designed for students registered on the master program for intercontextual theology, Religion og Samfunn and Profesjonsetikk og Diakoni .

Teaching

Lectures, seminars and practical training. Teaching language: English and Norwegian.

Formal assignements

  1. Written and oral presentation of chosen topic.
  2. Written and/or oral literature review related to chosen topic.
  3. Written and/or oral presentation of chosen methodology.

Examination

The project description for the master thesis is to be accepted by the Course leaders and the program coordinator. Max. 4000 words.

Will be graded in the A to F-scale.

Evaluation

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
