MAE4221 – Research Seminar I: Researcher's Skills

Course content

The purpose of the course is to (a) train basic research skills with a focus on scientific information literacy, and (b) prepare you for starting your master thesis research project.

The course covers the following key topics

  1. Scientific reasoning and ethics
  2. Mapping a research domain through research syntheses
  3. Writing a thesis proposal

Learning outcome

Upon completion of the course, you

  • are aware of classical and critical perspectives on science and measurement

  • systematically and critically evaluate and review a body of scientific studies

Competencies

  • begin independent research in view of existing knowledge, relevant analytic frameworks, and research methods

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

This course is only open to students who are admitted to the master's programme in Assessment, Measurement and Evaluation.

Teaching

Instruction is provided through many small workshop seminars of varying length and format, often including discussion, presentations, practical exercises, and assignments.

Active participation and implementation of the activities specified under each seminar component is required. If you do not fulfill the requirements, you must complete an additional assignment before handing in the thesis proposal.

 

Examination

The end examination takes the form of a paper which contains your thesis proposal (max. 10 pages).

Use of sources and citation

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Evaluation
