EDU4300 – Targeted issues in Comparative and International Education
Course description
Course content
In support of the preparation of the MPhil thesis, a special course is designed on a number of targeted issues in Comparative and International Education that spring from the choice by students of topics for their MPhil thesis. The teaching of these issues will be integrated with the development of the research proposal for the thesis. The research proposals will be discussed in a seminar series in which students and supervisors participate.
Learning outcome
The course aims at enhancing the students’ capacity to identify innovative research topics, in view of existing knowledge, and to undertake independent research. This includes understanding how to develop relevant analytical approaches and research designs in view of a specific, self-selected topic.
Admission

The Comparative and International Education Programme is open to all students who fulfil the basic requirements above. The main target groups are international students, for example students under the 'Quota' Programme (developing countries), NOMA scholarship students from developing countries, partner institutions, Erasmus students and NORDPLUS students. Norwegian students are also encouraged to apply.
All students in the 3rd semester of the programme have equal access to the course. Other applicants may be considered if there is capacity.
Only students who have been admitted to the course may attend the lectures, seminars and examinations.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Students are required to have passed all previous courses in order to attend this course.
Teaching
The courses combines lectures with seminars, group work, exercises and oral presentations by students.
There is a mandatory 80% attendance requirements for all courses. If a student does not fulfil the mandatory attendance requirement, they will need to complete an additional assignment prior to passing the course.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
Students are required to develop a research proposal of 15-20 pages that represents the skeleton of the MPhil thesis. The proposal draft will be approved by the teachers involved in the course.
The exam consists of a written paper. Requirements and deadlines will be announced at the beginning of the course. Students will receive a preliminary evalution of pass/fail. Students who fail the preliminary evaluation will have the possibility to rewrite their paper.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
