HEM4250 – Thesis Proposal

Course content

The course is organized in seminars in which you are expected to improve your initial thesis proposal from one to the other seminar. The first seminar is primarily focused on the research questions, their formulation and researchability, and the coherence between the research questions and the research design. The second seminar focuses on the choice of theoretical/analytical framework and the elaboration of the methodological approach.

Apart from presenting your thesis proposals in both seminars, you will be expected to comment on thesis proposals of other students.

The course is designed to teach you how to write a research proposal as a basis for your Master thesis work.

  • have knowledge on relationship between the research questions, research design and choice of methodology and the theoretical/analytical framework

Skills

  • be able to organize your work on the thesis, taking into account your role in relation to the role of the supervisor(s), the aims of the process of producing a master thesis, as well as limitations in terms of resources
  • be able to write up your research and produce a clear, consistent and coherent thesis

Competence

  • be able to critically assess the feasibility and coherence of research proposals
  • be able to work independently on your thesis

The course is a part of the Master programme in Higher Education. Only students formally accepted to these programmes may attend this course.

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

Successful completion of HEM4112 – Research Methods and Statistics - course I (discontinued) or equivalent.

Teaching

The course is based on a series of seminars, with active student input, as well as home assignments. Activities include the continuous development of your proposal, presenting the proposal during seminar, as well as analysing and commenting other thesis proposals.

There is a mandatory 80 percent attendance requirement for this courses. If you do not fulfill the mandatory attendance requirement, you will need to complete an additional assignment prior to passing the course. The requirement for the additional assignment is at the discretion of the teacher.

Examination

The students are required to write a thesis proposal. The length of the proposal should be between 10-12 pages. The proposal will be submitted in Inspera.

Use of sources and citation

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
