Course content
Governance, Management, Administration, and Leadership of Higher Education Institutions is a module in the Master Programme on Higher Education.
Learning outcome
The aim of the module is to provide the students with the theoretical foundation in institutional governance, management, administration and leadership and to help them to apply these theories into practice. The environment of higher education institutions has changed quite dramatically in a decade or two in most countries. In particular, the relationship between governments and institutions has been under pressure in these processes of change. Also, the role of markets in system level coordination has increased. As a consequence, the institutional management and leadership capacity to deal with a more turbulent environment with less government funding has become a key success factor for universities and colleges affecting quite directly the quality and efficiency of their educational and research activities.
The concepts of institutional governance, management, administration and leadership and their applications to university and college settings form the basis for the module. These concepts and the main theories in this area are applied to institutional planning and development as well as to the systems of quality assurance and models helping to understand the relationship between institutions and stakeholders.
The reading list for each module consists of approximately 600 pages of literature.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
The course is a part of the second semester of the Master Programme on Higher Education. Only students formally accepted to the programme may follow the course.
Teaching
The module is built up of four weeks. The first week consists of one introductory lecture and individual literature studies. The second week is comprised of lectures and seminars, and in the third and fourth week the students write a paper.
A central element in the module is a case study, which helps the students to understand different aspects of institutional structures, functions and mechanisms. In the beginning of the course the students will look for an academic and financial survival strategy in small groups for a fictional university in a profoundly changing environment.
The module has been developed, and is taught by lecturers from the Hedda partners, a European network of higher education research institutions
Examination
The examination of this module consists of a term paper on a topic related to the module. For the examination the following marks are used: PASS, and FAIL
