PED2620 – Gender and higher education in a comparative perspective

Course content
The course contains:
-an overview of the history of the gender structure in higher education from its earliest development to the present in a comparative perspective;
- the effect of globalization on gender inequalities in higher education;
- Women’s Studies as a field and its contribution to science; various theories in analyzing the field and different methodologies used to analyze case studies of one country or several counties.
Learning outcome
The course offers heightened insight into historical and current trends in relation to gender in higher education.
The course aims at developing competence to work in several areas as equality expert on the level of higher education, international organizations and in research.
The course gives competence in handling statistical data in the field.
More generally, the student gets training in writing scientific papers, analytical thinking and argumentation.

Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
Bachelor level: Basic entrance requirements
(Master level: Bachelors degree or equivalent level of qualifications. Other applicants will be considered for admission individually).
It is recommended that students have at least 30 ECTS points within education or social sciences.

The course overlaps 100% with PED1620
Teaching
Combination of lectures and seminar.
Oral presentation by students and supervision of papers.
Students are expected to participate in the seminars.
Students will be offered academic supervision for course requirements.
It is compulsory to attend the first lecture/seminar. Students that do not attend will loose access to the course. Students that are ill or otherwise prevented from attending must contact the study administration of the course (see contact information on the semester page).
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
Requirements: (obligatory components):
Bachelor level
The students are required to write a paper of 5-8 pages.
(Master level
The students are required to write a paper of 10-12 pages.)
For both levels:
Students are expected to participate in the seminars.
The deadlines for requirements will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
All requirements have to be fulfilled the same semester.
Exam: The requirements are to be submitted within deadline.
Examination support material
No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
The language of examination is english.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination
Withdrawal from an examination
A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
