RSNE3013 ¨C Basic concepts in Statistics

Course content

This course gives students an introduction to both theoretical and applied concepts in statistics. Descriptive and simple inferential statistics will be focused upon. Core content includes understanding standard scores and percentiles, running simple statistical tests, and indentification of statistical tests in research.?

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

After completing the course, you should have basic gained knowledge about:??

• variables and how to describe them?

• basic notions of probability as a frequency or proportion?

• standard scores and percentiles?

• basic inferential statistical tests such as t-tests and correlations

Skills:

After completing the course, you should be able to:??

• formulate research questions in terms of associations among variables?

• comfortably convert between standard scores, standardized and scaled scores; and interpret these in terms of percentiles?

• use of a statistical software, such as Jamovi??

• run simple statistical tests to compare groups and examine correlations among variables, and interpret the results of these tests at a basic level?

• read and report simple statistical tests according to APA guidelines?

General competence:???

• the statistical foundation necessary for scoring and interpreting psychoeducational tests?

• a more solid foundation for reading and understanding professional and basic research articles in your field?

• improved computer skills including use of statistical software?

Admission to the course

This course is open for international exchange students at Bachelor's level. Formal prerequisite: Completed first and second year of a bachelor's degree.

Recommended previous knowledge

Recommended prior knowledge: SPED1200 Spesialpedagogiske forskningsmetoder og forskningsbasert praksis or equivalent.?

Teaching

The teaching is comprised of lectures and seminars.??

Compulsory activities:

The compulsory component must be completed and approved before you are allowed to take the exam.

Examination

Individual written 3 hour examination.

Examination support material

No examination support material is allowed.

Language of examination

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Resit an examination

Students who do not pass an exam may have a second attempt as soon as it is possible to arrange. This is called a re-sit examination. The re-sit examination is held within 3 months of the original examination.

Students who have passed their exam, but who wish to improve their grade may not participate in a re-sit examination. You may take an exam to improve your grades the next time the course has an ordinary exam, as long as you have not already used all three attempts.

The Department of Special Needs Education will provide information and guidelines about the re-sit examination.
