SNE4220 – Barriers to Learning, Development and Participation in Society; II
Course content
This course is a component in the second semester of the two-year Master programme in special needs education.
Areas of study include:
- Socio-emotional learning, mastery and development, and barriers that may occur related to society, individual and interactivities
- Acquisition of skills in reading, writing, numbers and arithmetic, and barriers to learning
- Creativity, play and cultural activities
Learning outcome
The course offers knowledge and insight into:
- socio-emotional support: creating a psychosocial safe-haven
- socio-emotional barriers in society, groups and single persons
- a variety of aspects concerning learning and development of reading, writing and arithmetic skills
- barriers that may occur to these learning processes
- preventive approaches and meaningful adaptation of learning possibilities to special needs
- examples of support strategies to minimise or overcome barriers
The course represents an updated introduction into the mentioned fields, and a foundation for further studies into selected fields in connection with individual field studies.
Admission

Number of students: 30
The course is obligatory for students at the Programme Master of Philosophy in special needs education. Other students who fulfil the admission requirements can also apply to this course. Priority will be given to students formally accepted to the programme.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
- SNE4110 – Education for All og SNE4120 – Towards Inclusive Education.
- A relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent with a minimum grade of C or the equivalent
- Knowledge of English documented by one of the following or equivalent:
- Basic English from Norwegian or equivalent Upper Secondary School (videreg?ende), grade 4 or better (Norwegian grading system)
Foreign students in accordance to international requirements:
- TOEFL examination with a score of 550 (213 computer-based) or higher
- IELTS examination with a score of band 6 or higher
Teaching
- Lectures
- Seminars
- Literature studies
- Video cuts and other types of exemplifications
- Individual and group miniature assignments
- Group and plenary discussions
Reading: The reading are in total about 650 pages; some of it obligatory and some of it individually selected reading.
Examination
Combined group- and individual presentation of assignment.
Examination will be given at the end of every spring semester
