In this course we discuss recent changes in the field of education and what implications these changes can (and should) mean for our understanding of the nature of educational science. These changes include a massive growth of the field, mainly related to teacher education research; the dissolving of the traditional disciplinary boundaries; the evidence-based movement which professes a largely a-theoretical approach, and the concomitant changes in the status of educational research. Using meta-theoretical perspectives to discuss and portray the field we shall address three main issues. (1) The twin problems of fragmentation of the field and the need to keep it together, coherent and identifiable as education. (2) The notions of disciplinarity, multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity and their implications for educational research. (3) Different conceptualizations of the nature of educational science, its legitimate aims and scope.
The course format will consist of invited paper presentations and discussions. There are only 4 presentations, so there is ample time for discussion and participant interaction. Students are encouraged to prepare to bring topics/questions from their own research into the discussions.
The course is co-extensive with the pre-conference organized by the Philosophy of Education Network at NERA.
Aims:
- Knowledge of meta-theoretical perspectives and the current state of the discussions in this field
- Reflection on the place and position of own research project in the field of education
Admission
PhD candidates at the Faculty of Educational Sciences will be given priority, but it is also possible for others to apply for the course. Applicants must have at least a Master's degree.

Examination
To obtain 1 study point, 80% attendance in the course is required.
To obtain 3 study points, participants need to submit a course paper reflecting on issues concerning education as a science and disciplinarity related to their own research (5-7 pages, Times New Roman 12, line spacing 1,5) after the course. The deadline for essay submission is April 30, 2018. 80% attendance is required.
