Onboarding of New Employees at the Natural History Museum

At NHM, we strive to ensure that newly hired employees feel warmly welcomed as they begin their new roles. Following the onboarding procedures of UiO, we provide systematic support to new employees throughout their first year of employment.

These procedures apply to new employees in permanent and long-term positions across all sections of the museum, including both scientific and technical-administrative staff. For shorter-term temporary positions, managers will decide the extent and duration of the onboarding process.

Onboarding

The initial period in a new job is crucial for the employee, the manager and our museum, as it lays the foundation for the employee's well-being, integration, and long-term success. Establishing oneself in a new role often takes several months. During this time, new employees, particularly those from abroad, engage in intensive learning and adaptation processes. A carefully prepared and effectively executed onboarding process is beneficial for all parties involved.

Onboarding Objectives

The onboarding process should be tailored to meet the new employee's needs and assist them in:

  • Quickly become integrated into NHM's organisational culture and understanding the museum's role.
  • Grasping their responsibilities, roles, and tasks.
  • Familiarising themselves with practical matters, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Receiving necessary skill development and training.
  • Establishing essential connections.

Manager's Responsibility

The manager responsible for overseeing the new employee's personnel follow-up, is also responsible for planning and implementing the onboarding process, although they can involve key people for assistance. Upon completion, the onboarding process transitions into the annual one-to-one work dialogue, also conducted by the manager, which builds upon the foundation laid during onboarding.

To assist managers in planning and conducting the onboarding process, NHM has developed a practical guide.

Administration and HR Support

The administration plays a vital role in assisting managers with practical and administrative tasks related to onboarding new employees. In addition, HR serves as a key resource for managers, providing guidance, clarification, and support throughout the onboarding process.

Buddy

At NHM, every new employee is paired with a buddy for extra practical guidance and social support during their initial month.
