AstraZeneca, the SPARK Norway programme at University of Oslo and Oslo Cancer Cluster enter a new mentoring collaboration for life science start-ups.

The Norway Life Science 2023 conference brings together key actors for developing a world-leading healthcare industry in Norway. The theme of the conference is interaction between health, technology and society.

Fifty students have gained work experience from a research project with a scholarship from UiO:Life Science this summer. The end of this year's summer projects was celebrated with presentations, poster exhibition and prize ceremony.

The University of Oslo, organised in collaboration with the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), the event "Is there hope for the Oslofjord" on 29 September. The theme arouses great interest and many people participated in Domus Bibliotheca.

In autumn 2021, six new convergence environments were granted funding for a period of four years. The interdisciplinary research groups have started up during 2022 and are well underway with the recruitment of PhDs and Postdoctoral fellows for their research projects.

Arnoldo Frigessi and Arne Klungland are granted Norwegian Centres of exellence.

Those who have passed the building site for the new life science building in Gaustadbekkdalen have probably noticed that there is full activity on the construction site at the moment. Seven high cranes tower into the air and construction machinery is in full operation. Some employees from the University of Oslo have visited the construction site.

Nathalie Frosthammer is studying at the Department for Biosciences, this summer she is one of 50 students participating in a research project with a scholarship from UiO:Life Science.

Inven2 presented "Innovator of the Year"-prize for the first time. Ole J?rgen Kaasb?ll, head of research and one of the founders of the company Tribune Therapeutics, was awarded the prize at Innovation Day 2022.

Inven2's Id¨¦pris 2022 goes to a virtual tool for developing antibodies. The idea was developed by Victor Greiff, head of the convergence environment ImmunoLingo, together with colleagues from the University of Oslo and Oslo University Hospital. 

UiO:Life Science established in 2021 a support scheme for interdisciplinary life science courses. Departments and faculties at the University of Oslo are eligible to apply. The scheme has an no deadline, applications can be submitted at any time.

Wednesday 20 April it was time to celebrate the new projects that have completed UiO:Life Science's innovation programme SPARK Norway. At the same time the Vaccibody Innovation Award was presented for the first time.

In 2017, something completely new happened at the University of Oslo, the first convergence environments were created under the auspices of UiO:Life Science. The six interdisciplinary research groups that were selected after a thorough application process were to solve major societal challenges in health and the environment. Wednesday 30 March was the closing event and time to share experience and results.

Maia Bangsund has already started her summer project and will be researching for a total of six weeks full time at BabyLing Lab where she contributes to an ongoing study on children's early language development.

Recently the new biotech company Tribune Therapeutics was established based on research conducted by Ole J?rgen Kaasb?ll and H?vard Attramadal. Ole J?rgen Kaasb?ll was admitted to UiO:Life Science¡¯ innovation programme SPARK Norway in 2019 and will now assume the role of Chief Scientific Officer in the new company where Georg Vo Beiske, HealthCap has been appointed Chief Executive Officer. Tribune Therapeutics aims to develop a treatment for fibrosis.

UiO:Life Science does not offer its own courses or study programs in life sciences, but wants to contribute to providing the students with the best possible educational programs. Departments and faculties can now apply for support to develop interdisciplinary bachelor courses in life sciences. The application deadline is 1 April.

After being corona-delayed by six months, it was time to celebrate the first graduates from the innovation program SPARK Norway. The graduation of a total of nine projects was marked with the presentation of diplomas and presentations given by all project managers, also called SPARKees.

Last week it was announced that the new Life Science Building risks considerable budget cuts to stay within budget. Difficult ground conditions and extra engineering costs are the main reasons.

Nuria Pereira Banzon is one of 41 students who received a grant from UiO:Life Science to work on a life science research project this summer. She is working on the project ¡®How impaired brain garbage recycling and bad sleep affect memory?¡¯ which is headed by Associate Professor Evandro Fei Fang at Akershus University Hospital. 

Gerd Nilsen becomes a new business representative on the board of UiO:Life Science from June 1. Gerd works as Senior Project Manager in Thermo Fisher Scientific.

The University of Oslo's board has decided that the initiative UiO:Life Science will be continued for a new five-year period.

Psychology student Emma Eriksson is part of the team at the University of Oslo and Oslo University Hospital that will test a new innovative treatment on Norwegian patients with chronic pain. The method involves meditative breathing with monitoring on smartphones at home.

UiO:Life Science hopes to see Norwegian finalists in the pitch competition at the tech conference SLUSH in Helsinki on 5 December. The winner is granted 30 000 euros. Life science students and researchers in startups or pre-startups are welcome to apply before 1 October at 12:00.
