Install NVivo (PC) or Omnissa (Mac)
Note that NVivo is optimized for Windows and we only offer courses in NVivo for Windows. Mac users at UiO can use NVivo for Windows in Omnissa. There is a Mac version but we do NOT recommend it as it is lacking in functionality.
- PC users with a UiO laptop: download and install NVivo from Software Center.
- PC users with a private laptop: UiO users can download and install from Winprog, and enter the license key provided at winprog on the NVivo activation page.
- Look for "provide enterprise key to activate" at the bottom of the activation page, and disregard the NVivo log in, see screenshot here.
- Mac users: UiO users can download and install Omnissa for UiO Program Kiosk which provides access to a range of programs, including NVivo. If you need a version supported for macOS Monterey (12) you can download it here. If you have an older version of macOS, we recommend you update your macOS under System Settings on your Mac.
- Follow the steps for initial setup of Omnissa.
- Follow the installation guidelines to grant Omnissa access to your local files by adding areas in "Drive Sharing" under Settings. See set up access to your own files and OneDrive in Program Kiosk.
- You can use Nvivo as an app or you can use Kontor Fullskjerm to work with Nvivo on a Windows Desktop.
- Unable to download and install NVivo or Omnissa?: In that case, you can use Omnissa for UiO Programkiosk in the web browser.
- To grant access to your local files in Omnissa's web solution, select "Enable Client Sharing" under Settings.
Log in to NVivo
Do not log in, as login is only for services users at UiO do not have access to. UiO has assessed these services not secure.
Create a NVivo project
- Give your project a title.
- Check where you save the project and be sure you do not save it in a cloud service. Use Browse to select a different location if it automatically chooses OneDrive. Feel free to use your UiO provided home directory (M: drive), which is available on all UiO Windows computers, see more details for how to connect to it here (Norwegian). Or use the local hard drive. If you are working on a Mac in UiO Program Kiosk with Omnissa, save your project in your home directory (M: drive), which is the default file directory in UiO Program Kiosk.
- Choose the language for the data you will analyze. If your language is not on the list, simply select Other.
- In the next step, you select how often the project file should be saved, and whether you want to save an automatic backup. The backup can be stored in OneDrive, but if you're going to open it in NVivo and work on it, it needs to be moved to a stable location.
Stop words
When you perform a Query or a word count in NVivo, there are some commonly used words that are not counted (for instance a, the, is, are, etc.). However, if you have chosen Other as the language in NVivo, NVivo counts these types of words. You can enter your own stop words in NVivo under File - Project Properties - Stop Words. These are entered without spaces and line breaks.
Lists of commonly used stop words in different languages are readily available online.
