Remote Desktop with two-factor authentication

To use Remote Desktop at UiO, you are required to confirm your login with Microsoft Authenticator.

Most IT services at UiO, including Remote Desktop (RDP), require two-factor authentication. You can only use Remote Desktop with the Microsoft Authenticator app.

If you're already using Microsoft Authenticator for two-factor authentication, no further action is needed. Simply log into RDP and confirm the login in Microsoft Authenticator.

Are you using a different method than Microsoft Authenticator?

You cannot use Google Authenticator, SMS, or hardware token for two-factor authentication for Remote Desktop. To use Remote Desktop, you need to install and set up Microsoft Authenticator. See the guide if you’re currently using another method.

Two-factor authentication for Remote Desktop with Microsoft Authenticator step-by-step

  1. Start Remote Desktop Connection on your computer. Most often, you do this by double-clicking on a shortcut on the desktop.
  2. Enter the computer or server you want to connect to.
  3. After you enter your username and password, the login will hang on Initiating remote connection... and you will receive a notification from Microsoft Authenticator on your mobile phone.
