Most IT services at UiO, including Remote Desktop (RDP), require two-factor authentication. You can only use Remote Desktop with the Microsoft Authenticator app.
If you're already using Microsoft Authenticator for two-factor authentication, no further action is needed. Simply log into RDP and confirm the login in Microsoft Authenticator.
Are you using a different method than Microsoft Authenticator?
You cannot use Google Authenticator, SMS, or hardware token for two-factor authentication for Remote Desktop. To use Remote Desktop, you need to install and set up Microsoft Authenticator. See the guide if you’re currently using another method.
Two-factor authentication for Remote Desktop with Microsoft Authenticator step-by-step
- Start Remote Desktop Connection on your computer. Most often, you do this by double-clicking on a shortcut on the desktop.
- Enter the computer or server you want to connect to.
- After you enter your username and password, the login will hang on Initiating remote connection... and you will receive a notification from Microsoft Authenticator on your mobile phone.
- Confirm the login in Microsoft Authenticator and the connection will continue.
Note! You will not receive a notification in Remote Desktop on your computer for two-factor authentication – it will only appear on your phone.
