Programme structure
If you have a Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Molecular Biosciences, your study progression may look like this: In the first semester, which is normally during the Autumn, you take the courses BIO4500 - General Toxicology and either BIO4540 - Human Toxicology or BIO4550 - Ecotoxicology. It is also possible to take all three courses. Students starting in the Spring term start with other courses or work with their Master’s theses during the first semester. Some students will have BIO4500 or the equivalent in their Bachelor’s degree, and will then in discussion with their supervisor, be able to take another relevant course the first Autumn semester. In the Spring semester it is possible to take more extensive courses either at UiO or at other institutions. The Master’s thesis must be completed in the fourth semester.

Optional Master’s courses must be taken when it fits in to the study plan. Students in Ecotoxicology usually take the course MBV4330 - Fors?ksdyrl?re (Norwegian) early in the Spring semester. Other relevant courses may be BIO4530 - Regulatory toxicology , BIO4330 - Effects of Pollution on the Aquatic Environment or BIO4381 - Harmful algae . You are free to choose a course based on which interests you have, biochemical toxicology, regulatory toxicology, ecotoxicology, organism oriented toxicology with a specific focus on mycotoxins, harmful algae etc.).
Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)
At the beginning of the first semester, you also have to attend four mandatory e-learning courses in Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and a practical course in firesafety as follows:
- HMS0501 Safety and Physical Environment
- HMS0502 Positive Learning Environment
- HMS0503 Laboratory Safety
- HMS0504 Field Safety
- HMS0507 Fire Safety
You are exempted from these HSE course requirements, if you have already completed the equivalent HSE courses in relation to a bachelor programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at UiO.
Recognition of Master courses from former education
If you are admitted to the Masters Programme and you have completed Master courses outside the University of Oslo, you may apply to have these courses recognised as part of your degree. Please contact the Department of Biosciences for more information.
