Structure for students who started on the programme from 2019 to 2021

You should take (at least) one of the courses in methodology offered in the second semester (MEVIT4811, MEVIT4812 and MEVIT4813). You may take more than one, but if you do, you should take one 5 ECTS course in addition the same semester, or next, so that you end up with enough ECTS points. IMK offers some 5 ECTS courses, and some are available for you from other departments at UiO. In any case, this will entail that you exchange one of the mandatory courses in Screen Cultures for an elective course.

You may exchange one of the following courses for an elective course during your studies: MEVIT4710, MEVIT4701, MEVIT4702 or MEVIT4703.

Elective courses

You may exchange one of the following courses for an elective course during your studies: MEVIT4710, MEVIT4701, MEVIT4702 or MEVIT4703. This course should normally be chosen from the portfolio of master's courses at the Department of Media and Communication. (Including a course as a research assistant or a self composed course, see MEVIT4896 – Vitenskapelig assistansearbeid and MEVIT4897 – Selvvalgt emne).

Screen Cultures also offers an opportunity to take an internship course as your elective course during you studies:

You can also apply to take a master's course at another department at the University of Oslo. This should normally be because the course has a connection with the topic of your Master's thesis. You need your supervisors recommendation to apply for this, and IMK can not guarantee admission, as this is up to the department that offers the course.

IMK offers the possibility to take elective courses at the Honours Certificate in Environmental Humanities and Sciences (autumn semester). The courses  EHS4020 – Introduction to Environmental Humanities and/or EHS4030 – Environmental Sciences: Understanding Climate Change are possible for IMK students to apply for. Contact the study administration at IMK before Studentweb opens for applications to the autumn semester (1 June) if this is something you wish to explore. (Note: each course is 5 ECTS).

You may take a course at Oslo Met as one of your elective courses (see below)

The master's thesis

The master’s thesis is an independent research project. All students will be assigned a group supervisor at the beginning of the program and an individual supervisor in your second semester.

As a student on the Screen Cultures Master' s program, you will take one of the Master's thesis courses: MEVIT4791 – Master’s Thesis in Screen Cultures, with presentation (60 ECTS) MEVIT4792 – Practical Masters's Thesis in Screen Culture (60 ECTS) or MEVIT4799 - Master's thesis in Screen Cultures (30 ECTS)

Please make yourself familiar with general information about the master's thesis at the Department of Media and Communication.

Placement semester

It is possible to take one semester as an intern at a workplace in/around Oslo that the Department of Media and Communications has an arrangement with, or a Norwegian embassy/consulate or similar abroad (you must be a Norwegian citizen for the latter option). The placement will not be paid. A placement semester entails a 30 ECTS master's thesis.

Note: Screen Cultures students also has the opportunity to apply for a shorter placement course of 10 ECTS: MEVIT4704 – Screen Cultures Internship-Course. This course will count as an elective course. Read more about this above.

You can not take both placement courses as part of your degree: MEVIT4930 – Praksissemester for mediestudenter, and MEVIT4704 – Screen Cultures Internship-Course. You may only take one of the courses if you want to include a placement as part of your degree.

Should you choose to apply for the 30 ECTS placement course, we recommend the following structure:
