Course content
The course focuses on electrical medical equipment used for the treatment of patients, in everything from examinations at the general practitioner, to advanced hospital treatment. The aim is to understand the fundamental principles for measurement techniques, imaging methods, treatment, and analysis of the most common types of electrical medical equipment used today, and to understand the context in which these are used. An essential part of the course is to describe the medical and physiological need for the equipment, and how these interact.
Learning outcome
After completing the course, you:
- have knowledge of fundamental?medical issues and terminology.
- have knowledge of how different types of electrical medical equipment work, advantages, and disadvantages of different methods, as well as sources of error and risks linked to the various methods.
- master the principles for different types of electrical medical equipment, you are capable of discussing this with medical staff, and you are also able to analyze the effect of different methods, danger potential, possibilities, and potential developments.
- are able to explain the physical and medical principles of biomedical instrumentation.

Teaching
The course extends over a full semester with 4 hours of lectures per week.
This course has?one mandatory?project assignment that must be approved before you can take?the final exam. The mandatory?project assignment will be an in-depth project where the candidate compares three different diagnostic technologies used for the same diagnosis and give an analysis of advantages/disadvantages, limits, and possibilities. (E.g.: CT/MR/PET)
Examination
- Written midterm exam, which counts 40 % towards the final grade.
- Final oral or written exam which counts 60 % towards the final grade.
The midterm exam must be passed before you can take?the final exam. The form of the final exam is decided by the number of students signed up for the course.
This course has a mandatory project assignment that must be approved before you can take the final exam.
It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: FYS4250 – Biomedical Instrumentation
Examination support material
All written examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
Subjects taught in English will only offer the exam paper in English. You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about?the grading system.
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a?postponed exam?at the beginning of the next semester.
New examinations?are offered at the beginning of the next semester for students who do not successfully complete the exam during the previous semester.
We do not offer a re-scheduled exam for students who withdraw during the exam.
