During week 18 we shell work with electronic properties of interfaces and surfaces which corresponds to Chapter 17 in Kittel's book.
M/03/5/2010: p-n junctions and heterojunctions 10.15-12.00 W/05/5/2010:surface structure, Schottky contacts 13.15-14.00
Let me please request everyone who didn’t book the time for the final examination yet contacts me (at andrej.kuznetsov@fys.uio.no) within some nearest time making sure the time is allocated.
During week 17 we shell do an introduction to semiconductor properties of solids which corresponds to Chapter 8 in Kittel's book.
M/26/4/2010: 10.15 - 12.00 semiconductors, effective mass method
W/28/4/2010: 12.15 - 14.00 Impurity states in semiconductors
Note, the lecture on Wednesday the 21/4 is scheduled for the 12.15-14.00
NB! lecture on Wednesday, the 14/4 is during 12.15 - 14.00 and there is no lecture on Monday, the 20/4.
Note, the updated lecturing schedule for the rest of the teaching period: M/12/4/2010: Drude model and the idea of energy bands 2h W/14/4/2010: Nearly free electron model; Kronig - Penny model 2h M/19/4/2010: no lectures W/21/4/2010: empty lattice approximation 2h M/26/4/2010: semiconductors, effective mass method 2h W/28/4/2010: Impurity states in semiconductors 2h M/03/5/2010: p-n junctions and heterojunctions 2h W/05/5/2010: surface structure, Schottky contacts 2h M/10/5/2010: metals and Fermi surfaces 2h W/12/5/2010: no lectures W/19/5/2010: no lectures W/26/5/2010: repetition 2h
Thanks very much for doing the midterm examination on the 22/3 - altogether, 24 students have participated and the result is quite impressive - most of the people did very good in spite of the complexity of the exam. Please, find the text of the examination and the results in the section "midveiseksamen" at the course homepage. Note, problems 2.3 and 3.3 were found probably most difficult - very few answers were correct - and this problems are selected to be a part of the "promlemsession8" on Thursday, the 15/4 lead by H?kon B.
During weeks 10 and 11 we work with chapter 6 and going to explore a major part of it including heat capacity of electron gas but not going into electrical conductivity which we come back to after the Easter break. NB, Appendix D is also in our focus during this period. A significant repetition effort during week 11 lectures/seminars is planned in order to summarize in front of the mid-term exam.
During weeks 8 and 9 we concentrate our effort on phonon related thermal properties of crystals which corresponds to Chapter 5 of Kittel's book.
Week 7 is devoted to an introduction to vibrations/phonons in crystals which corresponds to Chaptter 4 of Kittel's book
Note, during week 6 we investigate a topic of "Point defects and diffusion" which is also reviewed in Chapter 20 of Kittel's book.
During week 5 (1-5/2) please continue working with "problemsession2" introduced on the 28/1
