Module I: Lecture notes/slides vs Kittel's Chapters 1-3 and 20

 Dear All,

The content of Module I is based on Kittel's Chapters 1-3 and 20, however some apparent discrepancies between the lectures slides/notes and the way the same ideas are elaborated in Kittel's book may be confusing. Please try to avoid accumulating bitterness if experiencing this conflict, which may also result in misleading conclusions, at least as it holds to my reasons. It is indeed not so trivial to keep a proper balance when doing an "introduction to the introduction" which is essentially the purpose of Module I. The approach I used in the lectures was (i) to rephrase some explanations, (ii) to avoid a part of complications, and (iii) to provide more detailed analysis of – in my understanding – relevant phenomena, in particular defects and diffusion in solids - all in comparison with that how it is done by Kittel in Chapters 1-3 and 20. Hopefully this explanation would help you to recognize a great deal of similarity between our lectures flow and the introductory chapters of Kittel's book.

FYI, the content of lectures in Modules II-IV will be much closer synchronized with corresponding Chapters of Kittel's book.

WR,

Andrej K.
