Dear all,
The superDARN quickplots are back, and even the interactive plotting tool!
Andres
The plotting tools for the SuperDARN are currently not available, as you may know. I sent an e-mail to the people in charge and I will keep you updated.
In any case, if you don't have any SuperDARN plot, you can either :
- Solution 1: Ask your other student friends if they agree to give you some of their convection map figures.
- Solution 2: Use Figure 3 from the article below (from another day) and do as originally asked, i.e., explain how you expect the convection pattern to change with respect to changes in the solar wind.
You can find the figure here: Article
Note that a short description of SuperDARN is required in any case, and if you use Figure 3 from the article, you must cite

Dear all,
Please send your final project by e-mail to the student administrasjon (cos@fys.uio.no) with your "kandidatnummer" (not your names) and not directly to me.
You can deliver the project from Wednesday 29.11.2017 at 12:00.
Deadline is 01.12.2017 23:59:59.
Dear Students,
1. This Friday, Per will give a short summary about the important points he went through during the semester.
2. ESTEC sent us polo shirts. This is very nice of them! I will bring the t-shirts tomorrow at 11:00 and you can pick one if you want. If you cannot make it tomorrow you can also come by my office sometime and get one.
Andres
I will be available in our classroom to answer questions regarding the project tomorrow Thursday 23.11 between 11:00 and 12:00.
As mentioned in class, you can all send me e-mails (or drop by my office) with precise questions about the project. Note that after tomorrow evening, I will not answer any "science questions" related to the project anymore.
Dear all,
The SuperDARN map potential plotting tool is currently down.
You can however use the "Convection maps" in the "Quick Browse" section (see Space@VT SuperDARN), which provides similar information. This gives 6 convection maps, and is quite useful to see how convection changes with time.
-Week 47 (next week): No class. You can use this time to work on your project.
- Week 48 (last week before the exam): We will repeat some of the most important points (related to the learning outcome of the course), and discuss some typical "exam questions".
Please send me an email as soon as possible with the name of your project partner so I can get an overview (one e-mail per team).
To those who haven't any project partner yet, please also send me an e-mail.
I also remind you that you have to deliver a project to be able to take the final exam.
On Friday,
We will give you a guided tour of the different data sets which you will use for the project (If you want to "play" with the data during the exercises, bring a laptop)
The results from the midtterm exam are available for students registered in the course here
As explained to you during the ESTEC excursion, ESA provides internships for students.

Additional pensum regarding Magnetosphere-Ionosphere coupling can be found at
(Until point 3 (magnetosphere-ionosphere current circuits) included)
To those who have signed up for the excursion,
See you at 6:45 at the SAS counter tomorrow. Please be on time!
Remember your passport!

The Copernicus Sentinel 5P will be launched on Friday. We should have the possibility to see the launch live from ESTEC, which is a big event!
It will be necessary to hurry at the Amsterdam airport if we want to make it in time for launch. So please only bring handluggages so we have a chance to make it!
Here is more infor about the Sentinel 5P mission:
https://earth.esa.int/web/guest/missions/esa-future-missions/sentinel-5P
The administration informed me that you are all required to have a travel insurance for the entire trip, and that it is your own responsibility to get one. So if you don't have any, get one for the trip!
You can find more info here:
norwegian: http://www.uio.no/om/regelverk/studier/forsikring/
english: http://www.uio.no/english/about/regulations/studies/insurance/
Also note that those who stay longer do so at their own risk.

A few more info regarding the trip:
We meet at 6:45 at the SAS counter in the airport. I will take the train leaving nasjonalteateret 6:14 but you are free to get to the airport as you wish.
-Please do not be late (as we will not be able to wait for you)
-Passport is required.
-Do not check in yourself, as we have to check in as a group.
FOOD:
Lunch will be served as a buffet in the cantina at ESTEC. As this makes it difficult to have one receipt for everyone, we ask you to pay for your own lunch (it is very cheap).
We will try to gather and eat dinner at the airport. If you eat with us (so we get one receipt), you get 1 course +1 (nonalcoholic) drink for free. You are of course free to eat something else on your own, but then the food is on you.
People who signed up:
Only Friday: Martine, Veronica, Magnus,...
Tid: 11. oktober kl. 14:30 (3 timer).
Sted: Sal 3B Silurveien 2 (it is quite fare from Blindern, so plan your trip carefully)
Helping material allowed: you are only allowed to use a calculator (with nothing saved in its memory).
Good luck!!!
I will make an additional exam, i.e., a test exam, so you have more material to prepare for the actual midterm. This test exam will be on the webpage of the course this Friday.
I will be available next Wednesday (4.10.2017) from 15:00 to 17:00 in our classroom to help you with the calculations, to answer questions, etc.
The exercises on Friday 06.10.2017 will also be devoted to this test exam.
Final (oral) exam will be held Thursday 7.12.2017 and Friday 8.12.2017.
We will fly:
13.10.2017: SK821 08:20-10:10 (OSL-AMS)
13.10.2017: SK828 19:05-20:55 (AMS-OSL)
The ones who have signed up should have received an e-mail from me. Let me know if you haven't or if something went wrong!
You can find information regarding the Continuity equation and Momentum balance equation in the Book Chapters 2.1.2 and 3.4.2-3.4.3. I will come back to this on Tuesday.
We will take the flight SK 821 leaving at 8:20 from OSL on Friday 13.10.2017.
I haven't received any confirmation regarding the booking yet, so those who want to come on their own, please wait for booking (I will post here as soon as I know).
I have been asked to provide the names of those who want to come on their own by Thursday 07.09.2017 (tomorrow). Let me know during class tomorrow or send me an email by tomorrow 16:00.
