FYS9760 – Physics in medical x-ray diagnostics

Course content
The course will give an introduction to various x-ray based modalities being used in diagnostics at hospitals; regular x-ray photography and radioscopy, mammography, angiography and intervention, as well as data tomography (CT). The most important parts of the apparatus will be examined, with emphasis on digital image registration and reconstruction, as well as parameters controlled by the operator with a view to manipulating image quality and radiation dose to the patient, seen from the perspective of optimization. There will also be emphasis on providing an introduction to methods for the measurement, calculation and evaluation of radiation dose and image quality. The course will give the knowledge required to work as a medical physicist within the area of x-ray diagnostics in hospitals, a function required in accordance with the regulations for radiation protection and radiation use of 21 November 2003.
Learning outcome
The course gives a short introduction to dosimetry and interaction between ionising radiation and tissue, but it would be an advantage to have theoretical grounding in this area, corresponding to FYS-KJM4710 – Radiation and radiation dosimetry (continued). Through theory and practical examples, students will learn how to use instruments, calculation tools and image quality phantoms for quality checks on x-ray apparatus, as well as for evaluation of image quality and radiation dose to patients for optimization of examination protocols. An introduction to the relevant requirements in accordance with new regulations for the radiation protection area will also be given.

Teaching
About 30 hours with lectures and 10 hours review of exercises.
One day with laboratory work and demonstration at Ullev?l University hospital, and one day excursion to Str?levernet.
Three mandatory exercises that must be evaluated to pass in order to take the final exam.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
