MEF3100 – Characterization of materials
Course description
Course content
Central methods in characterization of materials: Metallography, optical microscopy, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, magnetic/electric characterization and surface techniques like AFM and SIMS.
Learning outcome
To get an overview of the theory and applications of characterization techniques important for industry and research.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway, you must either have 2MX/2MY/3MZ and 3MX/3FY/3KJ/3BI/(2KJ+3BT)/(2BI+3BT) from Norwegian upper secondary school, or have completed equivalent studies in mathematics as well as physics, or chemistry, or biology at upper secondary school or university level at another educational institution. Teaching
The course extends over a full semester with 30 hours of lectures, 30 hours of colloquia and a compulsory lab course of 32 hours.
Examination
The final grade will be based on lab reports, approx. 25% weight, a project work in the end of May with approx. 25% weight, and a written 3-hour exam with approx. 50% weight in the beginning of June. Letter grade.

Other
This course can preferably be combined with KJM3100 – Chemistry of Materials (discontinued) or KJM3500 – Surface and nano chemistry (discontinued) if your interests are within materials chemistry. Students who are interested in materials physics should combine it with FYS3410 – Condensed matter physics (continued). A useful third course in spring semester is MEF5000 or KJM2010 – Undergraduate Research I (continued).
