Course content
Important methods for characterization of materials: metallography, optical microscopy, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, magnetic/electrical characterization and surface techniques such as AFM and SIMS.
Learning outcome
The object of the course is to give students knowledge of main features in theory and applications of characterization techniques.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway, you must either have 2MX/2MY/3MZ and 3MX/3FY/3KJ/3BI/(2KJ+3BT)/(2BI+3BT) from Norwegian upper secondary school, or have completed equivalent studies in mathematics as well as physics, or chemistry, or biology at upper secondary school or university level at another educational institution. Overlapping courses
10 credits overlap against MEF3100 – Characterization of materials (discontinued) and also 10 credits overlap against KJ-MV213 (which was offered for the last time spring 2003) .
Teaching
The course extends over a full semester with 2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of colloquia per week. In addition a compulsory laboratory course is included.
Examination
Laboratory exercises; approx. 25% weight. Project work; approx. 25% weight. In addition a final written exam (3 hours); approx. 50 % weight . Letter grades.
