BIOS4010 – Methods in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry I

Course content

The course give an introduction to recombinant DNA technology and computer exercises to show how bioinformatic tools can be used within this field.

Learning outcome

After completing the course we expect your competence to include the following:

  • master various methods for gene cloning
  • master various methods for mutagenizing DNA
  • master bioinformatics tools for managing and analyzing DNA and protein sequences
  • know methods for analysis of gene expression

Formal prerequisite knowledge

HMS0503 – Laboratory Safety

Basic knowledge in molecular biology corresponding to a Bachelor degree in Bioscience.

Teaching

This course consists of

  • lectures

  • laboratory work with laboratory reports

  • computer work with reports

All teaching is compulsory during 4 weeks at the start of the autumn semester.

Attendance is mandatory for the first lecture, also for those on the waiting list. You will lose your seat on the course if documentation for valid absence is not provided to the student administration studieinfo@ibv.uio.no prior to the first lecture.

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

  • Final written exam, which counts 100 % towards the finale grade.? This course has mandatory assignments that must be approved before you can sit the finale exam.

The laboratory reports and the reports from the computer lab must be approved in order for the students to be eligible for the final exam.

It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: MBV4010 – Methods in molecular biology and biochemistry I (continued).
