Course content
The course deals with membrane structure, transport of proteins into the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), through the Golgi apparatus and out of the cell; chemical modification of proteins, different forms of endocytosis and intracellular transport; factors that regulate intracellular transport and fusion with different organelles; newly discovered pathways in the cell.
Learning outcome
After completing the course you are expected to:
- Have an overview of the different intracellular transport pathways in the eukaryotic cell, and understand how proteins and lipids affect these processes.
- Have knowledge of examples of how these transport pathways affect other cellular?and? physiological processes that involve?signaling, the cytoskeleton, etc.?
- Discuss?what is regarded as established knowledge and what it is still uncertain in the field.
- Search relevant literature, read original and review articles about cell biological topics and present them to?fellow students.
Admission to the course
PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through?Studentweb.
If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.
PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must?apply for a position as a visiting student?within a given deadline.
There is a limit of maximum 30 students.
The courses BIOS5913?and BIOS9913?have joint admission. Applicants are ranked by the following criteria:
- PhD candidates and master students at the MN faculty who have the course as part of the approved curriculum.
- Other PhD candidates and visiting PhD candidates.
- Students with admission to single courses on master’s level and exchange students.
Applicants are ranked by credits in each group; all applicants within 1st rank before applicants in 2nd etc. If admission is limited to a fixed number of participants, admission will be decided by drawing lots for students who are ranked equally.
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Admission to a PhD program.
Recommended previous knowledge
BIOS3700 – Cell Biology 2? BIOS4030 – Laboratory Methods in Cellular Biology or corresponding knowlegde.

Teaching
The course consists of

Attendance is mandatory for the first lecture and you will lose your seat on the course if documentation for valid absence is not provided to the student administration?studieinfo@ibv.uio.no?prior to the first lecture. The lectures must be considered as syllabus. There is mandatory participation in both lectures and student seminars. 80 % participation is required.
The teaching is concentrated over 2 weeks.
Examination
The mandatory participation in both lectures and student seminars must be approved before the exam.
