IN4010 – Acoustic Imaging
Course content
The topic is active acoustic imaging with an emphasis on medical ultrasound and sonar. The course focuses on fundamentals of acoustic propagation, beamforming, scattering, image formation, and imaging modes. Through simulations and theory, the principles of imaging from the generation and propagation of acoustic waves to the final images will be explained.
Learning outcome
After completing this course, you:
- understand basic theory of acoustic wave generation and propagation, and acoustic wave equations and simple solutions
- understand the signal processing principles of acoustic imaging
- can identify how properties of the imaging system and artefacts affect the images
- understand imaging modes such as B-mode and Doppler, and how they apply to different medical imaging scenarios
- understand sonar principles and applications
- know how raw element data is processed to images and be able to write computer programs to do so
