IN4210 – Network and Communications Security

Course content

Network and communications security is an important part of information security: a large portion of IT-related attacks are performed either using network connections or are directed at network infrastructures. . A majority of modern systems also depend on communication over networks. This course focuses on the application of cryptographic protocols and network protection techniques to secure computer networks and communication.

Learning outcome

After completing this course

  • you will have knowledge about cryptographic foundations of network and communications security
  • you will be able to manage cryptographic keys, certificates and crypto parameters
  • you will understand network/communication security protocols
  • you will be able to configure network perimeter security and security monitoring
  • you will have knowledge about security of global, local and wireless networks
  • you will be able to present a given subject (e.g. "IoT security") in a structured way to others

Admission to the course

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for?in Studentweb.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about?admission requirements and procedures.

General knowledge about networking and computer security, e.g. course IN2140 – Introduction to operating systems and data communication and IN2120 – Information Security

Overlapping courses

Teaching

The course will have

  • 2 hours per week: lectures (plenary sessions)
  • 2 hours per week: workshops (plenary sessions)

The workshop sessions will be used for seminar talks given by students and practical exercises

Examination

The course grade is based on the following assessments:

Both parts of the exam must be passed and must be passed in?the same semester

Oral Presentation:?Students will work together in small teams, do literature research on a given network security topic, and present the results in the seminar session.

It will also be counted as one of?your three?attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:?IN3210 – Network and Communications Security,?TEK5500 – Security in distributed systems (discontinued), UNIK4250 – Security in distributed systems (continued)

Examination support material

No examination support material is allowed.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F?is a fail. Read more about?the grading system.

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are?offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester. Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
