TEK4100 – Signal Processing in Wireless Communication Systems
Course description
Course content
The main purpose of the course is to give the students an understanding of the fundamental building blocks and associated signal processing techniques that are included in all modern radio communication systems. This should lay the foundation for understanding the performance and limitations of various wireless systems and standards such as for instance WLAN, Bluetooth, mobile terrestrial communications, both 4G and 5G, as well as both satellite communication systems, and industrial protocols.
Learning outcome
After completing this course, you
understand the fundamental building blocks of a communication system and their corresponding signal processing techniques
have insight into the fundamental performance limitations and how to design optimal functions/methods to limit the error probability of the information
are able to read and understand modern wireless standards both in order to design systems and to evaluate performance
have the competance to investigate standards and systems, and to assess their suitability for various applications
Admission to the course
The course is recommended for students with admission to Electronics, Informatics and Technology (master's two years), with the programme option Signal Processing and Imaging (programme option). The course is also recommended for students focusing on signal processing within the programme options Microelectronics and Sensor Technology (programme option) and CS: Imaging and Biomedical Computing (programme option).
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for?in Studentweb.
Nordic citizens and applicants residing in the Nordic countries may?apply to take this course as a single course student.
If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about?admission requirements and procedures.?
Recommended previous knowledge
It is recommended to have completed IN3190 – Digital Signal Processing / IN4190 – Digital Signal Processing or IN4160 – Digital system design.
Overlapping courses
- 10 credits overlap with UNIK4170 – Digital communications (continued).
- 10 credits overlap with INF2450 – Digital kommunikasjon (discontinued).
- 10 credits overlap with INF3450 – Digital kommunikasjon (discontinued).
- 5 credits overlap with TEK5070 – Wireless communications for autonomous and critical sensor systems.
Teaching
The course extends over a full semester with 2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of laboratory exercises per week.
This course has 2 mandatory assignments that must be approved before you can take the final exam.
Examination
A final oral exam counts 100% towards the final grade.
In case of many students, the final exam may be written.
This course has 2 mandatory assignments which must be approved before you can take the final exam.
When writing your exercises make sure to familiarize yourself with the rules for use of sources and citations. Breach of these rules may lead to suspicion of attempted cheating.
It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for (one of) the following course(s):
- UNIK4170 – Digital communications (continued)
- INF2450 – Digital kommunikasjon (discontinued)
- INF3450 – Digital kommunikasjon (discontinued)
- INF4450 – Digital kommunikasjon (discontinued)
Examination support material
No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
Courses taught in English will only offer the exam paper in English. You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.
Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass, the original examination.
