UNIK4530 – Surveillance and monitoring

Course content
Systems for surveillance and monitoring can be found nearly everywhere in modern society. Phenomena in Nature (weather, climate, ozon layer), industrial processes (furnaces, nuclear reactors, and robots), and the actions of individuals or groups (traffic control, burglary alarms, and military operations) are all being subjected to surveillance and monitoring. Some of these processes can be controlled through feedback loops, others not, and the surveillance may be cooperative or non-cooperative. This course will give an introduction to central notions, methods, and techniques in the theory of surveillance and monitoring. This includes sensor principles, sensor coverage, detection, tracking, data fusion, deterrence, and countermeasures. Examples such as air traffic control, fishery monitoring, oil spill detection, and climate monitoring will be discussed in some detail. Several examples from the history of war will also be presented.

To give an overview of surveillance and monitoring techniques that are rapidly emerging as central elements in modern information society.

Formal prerequisite knowledge
None.
Recommended previous knowledge
MA100, MA104/MA 114 and MA105/MA 113. Some knowledge of basic statistics will be useful.
Teaching
2 lecture hours per week plus exercises.
Examination
Oral. Grades scale A-F.
