MENA3300 – Nanotechnology

Course content

The course addresses nanoscience and nanotechnology, with emphasis on properties and applications for functional materials, and how these change in the nano dimensions. The course includes both synthesis, characterization, and description of how and why physical and functional properties change with nano dimension, as well as how this is used in applications. The course also deals with the ethical, legal, and social aspects (ELSA) of nanotechnology.

Learning outcome

After completing the course you should:

  • be able to give a description of what nanotechnology and nanoscience are.
  • be able to describe how and why physical and functional properties change with nanodimension.
  • have knowledge of a variety of analysis techniques for nanomaterials.
  • know a range of synthetic methods for nanomaterials.
  • know about different applications of nanomaterials.
  • be able to discuss ethical, legal and social aspects (ELSA) in nanotechnology.

Admission to the course

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for?in Studentweb.

Special admission requirements

In addition to fulfilling the?Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)

  • Chemistry (1+2)

  • Biology (1+2)

  • Information technology (1+2)

  • Geosciences (1+2)

  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by?equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies?(in Norwegian).

or similar courses.

Teaching

The course lasts one semester with 6 hours of teaching per?week, consisting of:

  • Lectures (4 hours)

  • Group seminars (2 hours)

This course has one mandatory project assignment that must be approved before you can sit the final exam.

Approved project assignment is valid for two semesters after the semester it was approved.?After this period, you must hand in the project assignment again before you can take the final exam.

It is mandatory to attend the first lecture (including students on the waiting list). If you are unable to attend the first lecture, you must notify the Department of Chemistry before the start of the lecture, otherwise your course registration will be cancelled.

Examination

  • Final written exam, 4?hours, which counts 100 % towards the final?grade.

One mandatory?project assignment must be approved before you can sit the final exam.
