Course content

The course provides an overview of the petrochemical industry and insights into the underlying thinking used in this industry. More specifically, the course covers general aspects concerning petroleum, the formation of petroleum, aspects of resources, refinement of petroleum, important processes in petrochemical industry, petrochemicals, polymers, catalysis and reaction kinetics. The course is suitable for all students with an interest within the chemistry of natural gas, oil, and coal, and industrial chemical production in general.

Learning outcome

After having completed the course, the candidate will be able to:

? Provide an overview of the most important processes in a petroleum refinery and the petrochemical industry.

? Account for the thermodynamic, kinetic, and reactor technical aspects that determine process design.

? Account for the basic classes and properties of industrial catalysts.

? Have basic qualitative and quantitative insights into the kinetics and adsorption on the surfaces of solid catalysts.

? Account for the chemicals comprising the base chemicals, how these are produced and the products which are manufactured from them.

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)
  • Chemistry (1+2)
  • Biology (1+2)
  • Information technology (1+2)
  • Geosciences (1+2)
  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

Recommended previous knowledge

KJM1010 – Kjemiske prinsipper og strukturer (discontinued) or KJM1011 – Organic Chemistry 1 (discontinued), KJM1020 – Organisk kjemi I (discontinued) or KJM1021 – Kjemisk struktur og reaktivitet (discontinued), KJM1030 – Uorganisk kjemi (discontinued) and KJM1060 – Struktur og spektroskopi (discontinued)

Overlapping courses

7 credits overlap with KJM3810 – Catalysis and Industrial Chemistry

Overlap: 7 study points with KJ202.

Teaching

The course has 40 hours of lectures and 40 hours of exercises. The first lecture is mandatory. If you are unable to attend, you have to report to the Expedition office (phone 22 85 54 46) in advance.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

Written (4 hours) examination counts 100 % of the final grade.

Examination support material

No examination support material is allowed.

Language of examination

You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Special examination arrangements

Application form, deadline and requirements for special examination arrangements.

Evaluation

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.

Other
