MAT1105 – Linear algebra and numerical methods

Course content
This course provides an introduction to linear algebra and numerical analysis. Linear algebra aims to solve large systems of equations and to analyse these solutions, while numerical analysis is the art of solving mathematical problems on a computer.
The course gives an introduction to vectors and matrices, and linear algebra in Euclidean space. We derive numerical methods for differentiation and integration, and we analyse the errors and limitations of these methods. The course also includes programming of numerical methods in either MATLAB or Python.
The course is closely connected to?IN1900 – Introduction to Programming with Scientific Applications. It is assumed that the student either can program already, or learns to program while taking the course.
Learning outcome
After completing the course you
- are familiar with basic mathematical logic
- know what vectors and matrices are, and can perform computations using them
- know Gaussian elimination
- know what linear independence, basis, change of basis and dimension are
- are able to compute determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and to use them to analyse practical problems analytically and numerically
- know how to derive and program numerical methods for approximation of the integral and derivative of a function
- know the limitations of these numerical methods, and can estimate their error.

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:
Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2
And in addition one of these:
Physics (1+2)
Chemistry (1+2)
Biology (1+2)
Information technology (1+2)
Geosciences (1+2)
Technology and theories of research (1+2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

- 5 credits overlap with MAT-IN1105 – Programming, Modelling and Computations (discontinued).
- 5 credits overlap with MAT1120 – Linear Algebra.
Teaching
5 hours of lectures and 2 hours of group sessions per week throughout the semester.
The number of groups offered can be adjusted during the semester, depending on attendance.
Examination
Midterm exam which counts 1/3 towards the final grade.
Final written exam which counts 2/3 towards the final grade.?
This course has 5 assignments, of which 3 must be approved before you can sit the final exam.

The examination text is given in Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
