MAT1060 – Mathematics for applications 2
Course description
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
The course provides an introduction to the use of mathematics as a tool for understanding physical processes. The main emphasis is on linear algebra, in particular as a tool for understanding discrete dynamical processes. Emphasis is also placed on the use of digital tools to visualize the theory and to perform quantitative computations within the models.
Learning outcome
After completing the course you
- will have skills in vector calculus, matrices and elementary spectral theory
- are able to use linear algebra to establish dynamical models, and to study stability and equilibrium
- are trained in the use of digital tools to perform computations in linear algebra
- know about general vector spaces of arbitrary dimension, including function spaces of infinite dimension
- are familiar with the concepts of inner product, orthogonality and their applications
- know about linear maps between vector spaces in general, how they may be represented, and their basic properties
- have knowledge about how one can study symmetries via group theory, you know what a permutation is, and you have basic knowledge in abstract group theory
- have knowledge about how symmetries can be used to classify molecules and other 3-dimensional bodies
- know what crystalline structures are, and how they can be studied by means of group theory.
