Course content

This course gives an introduction to the theory of systems of ordinary differential equations. Emphasis will be put on using dynamical systems as a modelling tool in different areas of science, technology, medicine, economy etc. The students will perform numerical studies of complex systems.

Learning outcome

After completing the course you will

  • have good knowledge of the fundamental theory in dynamical systems. This includes topics such as existence and uniqueness of solutions, linearization and stability theory, phase space techniques, bifurcation theory and Hamiltonian systems
  • have knowledge of the properties of systems which appear in a selection of applications
  • have good knowledge of the principles behind developing efficient numerical methods
  • be able to use software packages to solve complex dynamical systems.

Admission to the course

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for?in Studentweb.

Special admission requirements

In addition to fulfilling the?Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:
