Here is a suggested solution /studier/emner/matnat/math/MAT4400/h14/sol-mat3400-4400-2014.pdf to the exam.
I wish you all a good winter holiday!
There will be a question session on Tuesday 2 December at 14:15-15:45 (!) in U32. There will be an additional question session on Thursday 4 December at 12.30(!)-14:00. Place will be annonced later.
You can access pdf-files of exams sets from previous years from the course homepage. Look under "Oppgaver" in the left column for exams up to 2012. The exam set from 2013 is posted separately. I also posted a note explaining which problems from the earlier exams sets are relevant this year.
If you have questions about the assignment and your assignment was corrected by me, you can come and discuss them on Tuesday 11 November, from 10:15 to 11:15. I am in office B711. (Nadia Larsen). If this time interval is not good, just come by when you can.
There will be a "5-minutes question session" as part of the course evaluation at the lecture on Thursday, November 4. I'll hand out a sheet of paper with 3-5 questions about the course.
To compensate for the cancelled lecture on 16 October, the exercise session on 4 November will be a lecture. We go through section 3.5 (Fourier series) in Rynne and Youngson, and we finish section 4.1.
I am ill so there will be no lecture on Thursday 16 October.
The deadline for handing in the mandatory assignment is the one specified on the first page of the assignment, 30th October before 14:30. It is not 23 October, as previously indicated in a message.
This day the lecture will be back in room 126 in NHA building. (Once again, the room 108 with larger blackboards had been booked long ago for a different event).
I will present an alternative construction of the product measure than what is done in McDonald and Weiss. I will typeset lecture notes for this. The first version can be found here. An updated version containing the construction of the product measure and the proofs of Tonelli's and Fubini's theorems about changing the order of integration for a measurable function in two variables will be posted later.
Sorrily, there was a mistake in my proposal for a solution of the last part of Ex. 5.40. Thanks to Jan Josef for pointing this out. I tried to use a shortcut, but it appears to be a blind gate. I will post another solution later today. Erik. PS. A corrected version was posted 11.05.
There will be a mandatory assignment in this course. The asignment will be posted on October 9, and the solution to the assignment must be handed in on October 23, no later than 14:30. More details about rules on the assignment will follow.
NB: The lecture this day is moved to seminar room 123 in Vilhelm Bjerknes building.
Erik Bédos will give the exercise session (08.15-10.00) and the lecture (14.15-16.00) on Tuesday 2 September in room UE32 (NHA building, level -1). Sorrily, the new Timeplanner system is not able to show this correctly.
The student representatives for this course are Paul Aleksander Maugesten (email paulamau"at"student.matnat.uio.no) and Magnus R?en Vodrup (email magnus_roen"at"hotmail.com).
Starting on August 28, all Thursday lectures will take place in room 108 in the Niels Henrik Abel Building, with the exception of September 25, when the lecture will be in room 126 in the same building. (Disregard the fact that the calendar of lectures shows room 126 for all lectures.)
Starting on September 2, the Tuesday lectures will take place in room U32 (level -1) in the Niels Henrik Abel Building, with the exception of September 23, when the lecture will be back in room 123 in Vilhelm Bjerknes.
The lecture on 26 August at 14:15-16:00 will be in room 107 on the ground floor of the Niels Henrik Abel building. This room is located on the left-hand side as soon as you enter the building.
I asked at Akademika bookstore when they expect to receive more copies of the book by McDonald and Weiss. They could not give a precise date, but it is clear that more copies have been ordered.
Regarding problems for next week, if you do not have the book you can get a copy of the text of the problems at the lecture tomorrow, Thursday August 21. If you cannot attend the lecture but would like to have access to the text of the problems, please send me an e-mail at nadiasl"at"math.uio.no and I'll try to find alternatives.
Finally, as a general comment, I intend to follow the book by McDonald and Weiss closely. It is a well written book, and definitions, examples, proofs, etc, are well presented and appear with generous details. At the lectures I will sometimes present just the main ideas and steps in proofs, and refer to the book for the full details. Occasionally I will present slightly shorter or a bit different proofs.
