Welcome to Natural History Museum!

At NHM we are working together to contribute to a sustainable world through research, education, collection management and dissemination of natural diversity knowledge. We look forward to having you onboard as part of our team, and to support us in carrying out our important mandate.

We want you to have the best possible start in your new position at the museum. On this web page we have gathered information that can help you to get settled in your new position

Introduction of new employees (onboarding)

Your manager is responsible for your introduction to NHM and UiO, and for your follow-up throughout the onboarding period. Settling into a new position takes several months. Therefore, the onboarding process at UiO lasts for one year. During your first year at the NHM, you will have regular meetings with your manager. In addition, you will be followed up by a buddy.

New in Norway

UiO's International Staff Mobility Office (ISMO)

Before and upon arrival in Norway, there are some practical matters you need to take care of. UiO’s International Staff Mobility Office, ISMO, supports incoming international staff, PhD candidates, guest researchers and their families with relocation to UiO. On their web pages you may find information about accommodation, visas and permits, insurance, taxes, opening a bank account and more on ISMO's web pages. Don't hesitate to contact ISMO directly for assistance.

National identity number

Those residing in Norway for at least 6 months may receive a National identity number, which is important for a number of functions in Norway. More information about National identity number is available here

Please note that without a national identity number you cannot get a tax deduction card, and your tax rate will be automatically set to 50%, though you will be able to apply for a tax return at the end of the tax year. Please also note that if you are working in Norway for less than 6 months you are not eligible for a National ID number, but may apply for a D-number instead, to ensure that your salary tax rate is set correctly. Please find information about this on ISMO's website.

    Norwegian courses

Learning Norwegian is an important step towards integration, and NHM highly encourages international employees to learn Norwegian.

If you are a permanent employee, not fluent in a Scandinavian language, you are expected to learn a certain level of Norwegian within two years
